Louis Poulsen PH 3½ - 2½ Colorful Table Lamp
Poul Henningsen crafted the three - shade system in 1925/1926. The initial lights using this system were for a Paris exhibition. His partnership with Louis Poulsen lasted until his passing in 1967. Throughout his life, PH aimed to create lighting without glare, directing light precisely where needed and forming soft shadows with incandescent bulbs. The PH 2/1 Pendant belongs to the three - shade family, one of 19 versions available today. Over the years, about a thousand models have been made, including table, floor, and wall lamps, and many chandeliers popular in the 30s for high - ceilinged private homes.
PH was the pioneer in taking a scientific approach to light, basing his design on the logarithmic spiral. This design ensures even light distribution across the shade's curve. The combination of even light and diffuse reflection through the glass helps control glare and shadows. Each shade reduces light evenly according to its distance from the source. The PH light model numbers indicate shade sizes, with each top shade having matching middle and lower shades. In pure models like the 2/2, the top shade is around 20 cm, with corresponding lower shades. The PH 2/1 Pendant has an approximately 20 cm top shade but uses lower shades from the 1/1 model, introduced for hanging pendants at lower heights.
The louvre is completely glare - free, designed with a reflective three - shade system that directs most light downwards. In some versions, the top shade is made of deep - drawn aluminum with a white inner surface for gentle, downward light. The two bottom handblown opal glass shades create a large glare - free light area, making the most of the light source for comfortable, functional lighting.
